Manab Saving and Credit Cooperative Society Limited

Manab Saving and Credit Co-operative Society Limited is a Community Group and member-based Co-operative Model Microfinance Institution established in 2009 and registered under Co-operative Act 2065 of the Government of Nepal. This is situated at Birtamod Municipality 5 of Jhapa, Eastern Nepal. It is dedicated to the Social and Economic Development of the local community by reducing poverty. It is providing co-operative microfinance services to the members. It is also involved in a variety of social development programs such as livelihoods, skill development, community health, environment and women’s empowerment and entrepreneurship. It strives to raise awareness among the poverty-stricken and the downtrodden as well as to establish sustainable development in order to guarantee basic necessities and to achieve self-sufficiency, thus creating a legitimate Society.
Manab Saving and Credit Co-operative Society Limited is being operated by members of Human Development Centre (HDC) Nepal. HDC Nepal is a non-profit, non-political non-governmental organization (NGO) established in 2005. Although it can work in the social development sector, there are some limitations in working effectively in the microfinance sector, so a subsidiary organization has been run by members of HDC Nepal. It has been providing savings and credit services to rural and peri-urban poor women, poor people, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) for micro- enterprises and small businesses. At present, more than 1,800 members of the organizations are receiving financial services for small scale enterprises and income generation initiatives.

Activities carried out by the Society since its inception are:
• Under the leadership and facilitation of HDC Nepal, 1,817 women associated in the Cooperative Society are being mobilized in the business of savings and loans with the active participation of women.
• It is helping women to develop the habit of saving and move towards a secure future.
• So far, the total capital of the organization has reached around NPR. 20 millions. This amount is being used to make small businessmen entrepreneurs easier by providing loans at affordable interest rates and making their livelihood easier.
• A total of 875 women are working as successful entrepreneurs with vocational skills for SME/business.
• The Society has been conducting financial literacy education, livelihood training, vocational skills and capacity development training for income generation to the poor and vulnerable women.
• After business skill training, it has been providing loans for running the business at an affordable interest rate in the form of seed capital.
• By following the values and principles of cooperatives, the government has been building a society through qualitative improvement in the livelihood of targeted women through social, economic and political development of the poor, disadvantaged and backward classes.
• The standard of living of the members is being improved through economic, social and environmental services.
• It has been developing skilled manpower and mobilizing local resources to create self-employment.
